Target Information
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It acts on ligand-gated receptor channels such as NMDA, AMPA, and kainate receptors involved in fast excitatory synaptic transmission.
Recently, glutamate has been shown to regulate enzymes producing second messengers via G-protein–coupled receptors, called metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs).
Group-I receptors (mGluR1a, mGluR5) stimulate phospholipase C and increase phosphoinositide turnover and calcium release.
Group-II and -III receptors (including mGluR2 and mGluR3) inhibit adenylyl cyclase activity.
