Cathelicidin은 상피세포 유래 항균 단백질로, 골수, 고환 및 호중구의 과립에서 발견됩니다. Cathelicidin 계열은 보존된 프로-펩타이드 서열을 가지며, 인간 및 동물의 상피 조직과 골수계 세포에서 발현됩니다. 인간에서 LL-37/hCAP-18은 유일한 Cathelicidin으로, 염증 및 상피세포에서 발현됩니다. 이러한 분자는 피부의 세균 감염 방어에 필수적이며, 선천 및 적응 면역 조절, 내독소 중화, 혈관신생, 상처 치유, 호중구 화학주성 및 비만세포 유도 등 다양한 생리적 기능을 수행합니다.
Cathelicidin 항균 펩타이드는 감염 치료 및 면역 반응 조절을 위한 혁신적 약물 후보로 평가됩니다.
