Target Information
Melanopsin is an opsin-like protein found in the retinal ganglion cells of mammals. It is part of a secondary optical system that parallels the classic rod and cone system. This system reports directly to the suprachiasmatic nucleus and regulates circadian rhythms. Melanopsin is considered the primary photopigment responsible for circadian rhythm regulation. Knockout mice lacking Melanopsin show reduced ability to entrain to light/dark cycles.
