Target Information
The protein encoded by AGT (angiotensinogen precursor) is expressed in the liver and cleaved by renin in response to lowered blood pressure. The resulting angiotensin I is further converted by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) to the active angiotensin II, which plays a key role in blood pressure regulation.
Mutations in this gene are linked to essential hypertension, renal tubular dysgenesis, atrial fibrillation, and inflammatory bowel disease.
