Target Information
Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) proteins are abundant, pore-forming proteins located in the mitochondrial outer membrane and also expressed in the plasma membrane. At least three VDAC genes exist in vertebrates. These proteins are essential for cellular metabolism and apoptosis regulation, facilitating exchange of metabolites such as ADP/ATP, succinate, and citrate between cytosol and mitochondria. VDAC1 in the plasma membrane may regulate apoptosis through redox activity.
