Target Information

BID is a death agonist that heterodimerizes with either agonist BAX or antagonist BCL2. It belongs to the BCL-2 family of cell death regulators and mediates mitochondrial damage induced by caspase-8 (CASP8). CASP8 cleaves BID, and the COOH-terminal part translocates to mitochondria to trigger cytochrome c release. In response to TNF alpha or Fas ligand, BID is cleaved and activated, and the C-terminal 15 kDa fragment (p15) moves to mitochondria, initiating apoptosis. BID acts as a direct molecular link between caspase-8 activation and mitochondrial death machinery.
