Target Information

Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class constitutes the major proteins of the vertebrate eye lens and maintains transparency and refractive index. The taxon-specific class, also called phylogenetically restricted crystallins, includes this gene, which encodes a protein with NADPH-dependent quinone reductase activity distinct from other known quinone reductases. It lacks alcohol dehydrogenase activity but is considered part of the zinc-containing alcohol dehydrogenase family. In humans, lens expression is low compared to other mammals. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified, and one pseudogene is known to exist.
