Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene acts as a signal transducer shared by multiple cytokines such as IL6, CNTF, LIF, and OSM. It functions as part of the cytokine receptor complex, with activation dependent on cytokine binding. The viral IL6 (vIL6) protein, encoded by Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, can directly activate this protein without IL6R. Knockout studies in mice indicate its critical role in regulating myocyte apoptosis. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
