Target Information
Peroxiredoxin (Prx) is a family of peroxidases involved in cellular proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Mammalian Prx proteins (about 50 isoforms) contain an active site cysteine residue and exhibit thiol-specific antioxidant activity.
Among six mammalian Prx members, Prx I, II, and VI are localized in the cytosol, Prx III in mitochondria, Prx IV in the endoplasmic reticulum and secretory pathways, and Prx V is found in peroxisomes, mitochondria, and cytosol.
Except for Prx VI (1-Cys Prx), the other five 2-Cys Prx isotypes have thioredoxin-dependent peroxidase (TPx) activity utilizing thioredoxin, thioredoxin reductase, and NADPH as a reducing system.
Mammalian Prxs are typically 20–30 kDa in size and show diverse subcellular localization.
