Target Information
HIF1-alpha (HIF1A) is a subunit of HIF1, a transcription factor found in mammalian cells under reduced oxygen tension. HIF-1 is a heterodimer consisting of alpha and beta subunits, both belonging to the basic-helix-loop-helix Per-aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator-Sim (PAS) family.
HIF1 regulates the adaptive response to hypoxia by activating transcription of over 40 genes, including those for erythropoietin, glucose transporters, glycolytic enzymes, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).
It also plays roles in hypoxia-mediated apoptosis, cell proliferation, and tumor angiogenesis. HIF1-alpha interacts with p53 and p300/CBP-HIF complexes, influencing gene expression under hypoxic conditions.
In humans, HIF1A is located on chromosome 14q and contributes significantly to the pathophysiology of diseases such as ischemia, cancer, pulmonary hypertension, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
