Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is found in milk, mucosal secretions, and neutrophil granules. LF plays key roles in:
- Iron homeostasis regulation
- Host defense against microbial infections
- Anti-inflammatory activity
- Cellular growth and differentiation
- Protection against cancer development and metastasis
Lactoferrin efficiently binds Fe³⁺ and exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activities, cleaving arginine-rich microbial proteins. Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) are known, and receptors are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and some bacteria.
