Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. These proteins are growth and differentiation factors originally identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo. BMP4 plays a key role in the onset of bone formation, and reduced expression is associated with bone disorders such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing variants exist but encode the same protein.
