Target Information
Autophagy related protein 16L (ATG16L1) is encoded by the ATG16L gene located on chromosome 2 in humans. Also known as WD30 or IBD10 (Inflammatory Bowel Disease 10).
ATG12 and ATG5 conjugate and oligomerize with ATG16L1 to form the Atg16L complex (~800 kDa), which facilitates LC3 lipidation to phosphatidylethanolamine (PE)—a key step in autophagy.
This complex, along with other ATGs such as ATG18 and ATG21, prevents premature cleavage of ATG8-PE by the cysteine protease Atg4 until autophagosome completion.
