The human ASH2L gene encodes a 628 amino acid protein (ASH2L1, isoform 1) with a nuclear localization signal and PHD finger motif, suggesting its role as a transcription regulator.
Predicted molecular weight: 68.7 kDa
Alternative splicing may yield isoforms at 60 kDa and 56.5 kDa.
Human ASH2L shares 60% homology with Drosophila ash2, which regulates gene expression during early development, and 90% homology with mouse ASH2L. It is predominantly expressed in adult heart, testis, and fetal lung and liver, with low expression in adult lung, liver, kidney, prostate, and peripheral leukocytes.
ASH2L expression varies in leukemia cell lines (e.g., K562, Hel, Dami) upon differentiation induction (phorbol ester, hemin), indicating its potential role in hematopoiesis and leukemia.
It may also interact with beta-tubulin and beta-catenin.
