The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) family, which are signaling molecules regulating various cellular processes such as cell growth, differentiation, mitotic cycle, and oncogenic transformation.
This PTP has an extracellular region, a single transmembrane region, and a single intracellular catalytic domain, representing a receptor-type PTP.
A similar gene expressed predominantly in mouse brain associates with and regulates MAP kinase activity and localization. The rat counterpart is regulated by nerve growth factor, suggesting a role in neuronal growth and differentiation.
