Target Information

Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein polymerase that maintains telomere ends by addition of the telomere repeat TTAGGG. The enzyme consists of a protein component with reverse transcriptase activity, encoded by the TERT gene, and an RNA component serving as the template for telomere repeat synthesis. Telomerase expression is typically repressed in postnatal somatic cells, leading to progressive telomere shortening and cellular senescence. Deregulation of telomerase expression in somatic cells may contribute to oncogenesis. Studies in mice suggest telomerase also plays a role in chromosomal repair through de novo synthesis of telomere repeats at double-stranded breaks. Alternative splicing of TERT results in multiple isoforms, some of which have undetermined full-length sequences, and may regulate telomerase activity.
