Target Information
Mutations in the ABCA1 gene (ATP-binding cassette transporter 1) are associated with Tangier disease (TD), an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by absence of plasma HDL and abnormal cholesterol ester deposition.
ABCA1 mediates apo-A1–associated export of cholesterol and phospholipids from the cell.
It is expressed on the plasma membrane and Golgi complex, regulated by cholesterol flux.
Cholesterol flux regulation between HDL and macrophages involves competitive interaction between ABCA1 and SR-BI.
