Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPS16 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S16P family, which is highly conserved among mammals and yeast. Three pseudogenes have been identified at 8q21.3, 20q13.32, and 22q12-q13.1.
