Target Information

Beta tubulins are one of two core protein families (alpha and beta tubulins) that heterodimerize and assemble to form microtubules. Beta-III tubulin is primarily expressed in neurons and may be involved in neurogenesis, axon guidance, and maintenance. Mutations in the beta tubulin gene are associated with congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles type 3. Beta-III tubulin is also detected in Sertoli cells of the testis and transiently in non-neuronal embryonic tissues. Tubulin can undergo post-translational modifications such as glutamylation and phosphorylation on Ser-172 by CDK1, which affects microtubule incorporation.

Microtubules, composed of alpha and beta tubulin dimers, are key cytoskeletal components involved in chromosome segregation, intracellular transport, ciliary and flagellar motion, and structural support. Due to its ubiquitous expression, beta-tubulin is frequently used as a loading control in protein detection assays such as Western blotting.
