Product Specific Information

MA1-40277 detects Shigatoxin 1 from E. coli samples.
It has been successfully used in ELISA, functional assays, and Western blot applications.
The immunogen for MA1-40277 is the 1B subunit of Shigatoxin 1.

Target Information

Shiga-like toxins (SLTs), also called Verotoxins, are produced by enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) strains such as O157:H7, O26:H11, and O111:H8.
These toxins are implicated in hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic-uremic syndrome, characterized by acute renal failure, thrombocytopenia, and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia.

There are several distinct E. coli SLTs:

  • SLT-I and SLT-II are produced by EHEC.
  • SLT-I and Shiga toxin share 99% amino acid sequence homology.
  • SLT-I and SLT-II share about 60% homology and are antigenically distinct.

The toxin protein consists of two domains:

  1. A polypeptide – inhibits protein synthesis by targeting ribosomes.
  2. B polypeptide pentamer – binds to the eukaryotic cell receptor globotriaosylceramide (Gb3), leading to receptor-mediated endocytosis.
