This gene encodes a protein belonging to the glutamate-gated ionic channel family. Glutamate acts as the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system by activating ligand-gated ion channels and G protein-coupled membrane receptors. The GRIK4 protein forms functional heteromeric kainate-preferring ionic channels with subunits encoded by related gene family members.
