Target Information
Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is an immuno-modulatory cytokine essential for:
- Proliferation of activated T cells
- Differentiation of B cells, NK cells, monocytes, and macrophages
IL-2 signals through the IL-2 receptor (IL-2R), a heterotrimeric complex whose gamma chain is shared by IL-4 and IL-7. Expression of IL-2 in mature thymocytes is monoallelic, representing an unusual regulatory mode. Disruption of IL-2-like genes in mice leads to ulcerative colitis-like disease, indicating its critical role in immune response to antigenic stimuli.
