Target Information
Fentanyl is a synthetic, lipophilic phenylpiperidine opioid agonist with analgesic and anesthetic properties. It selectively binds to the mu-receptor in the central nervous system (CNS), mimicking the effects of endogenous opiates. Activation of the mu-opioid receptor inhibits adenylate cyclase, decreases intracellular cAMP, and reduces neurotransmitter release (substance P, GABA, dopamine, acetylcholine, noradrenaline). The analgesic effect is associated with its metabolite morphine, which activates potassium channels and inhibits calcium channels, leading to neuronal hyperpolarization and reduced excitability.
