Target Information
CRP (C-reactive protein) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit consists of 206 amino acids and has a molecular weight of 24 kDa.
CRP is produced by the liver, and its plasma levels rise dramatically during inflammatory processes. It initiates the classical complement cascade, binds to nuclear components (chromatin, histones, etc.), and plays a key role in innate immunity.
CRP levels can increase 100–1000 fold in response to injury, infection, or inflammation. It is opsonic, activates monocytes/macrophages, and binds to nuclear components such as chromatin and snRNP, suggesting a scavenger role during cell necrosis.
Elevated basal CRP levels are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
