Cathepsin L은 리소좀 내 시스테인 단백질분해효소로, 세포 내 단백질 분해에 중요한 역할을 합니다. 기질로는 콜라겐, 엘라스틴, 그리고 neutrophil elastase 활성을 조절하는 alpha-1 protease inhibitor 등이 포함됩니다. 이 단백질은 근병증 및 심근허혈에서의 근섬유 괴사, 단백뇨에 대한 신세뇨관 반응 등 다양한 병리 과정에 관여합니다. Peptidase C1 family에 속하며, 단일 전구체로부터 생성된 이황화 결합된 heavy 및 light chain으로 구성된 이합체 형태를 가집니다. 동일 단백질을 암호화하는 최소 두 가지 전사 변이가 보고되었습니다.
