Target Information
Adenylate kinase regulates adenine nucleotide composition within cells by catalyzing reversible phosphate transfer among adenosine nucleotides. Three isozymes—AK1, AK2, and AK3—are found in vertebrates.
- AK1: Cytosolic, present in skeletal muscle, brain, and erythrocytes
- AK2 & AK3: Mitochondrial, found in liver and heart tissues
AK1 mutations are associated with nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia due to reduced catalytic activity.
