Target Information
The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, the receptor translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.
AR signaling is essential for development and function of male reproductive organs (prostate, epididymis) and also influences muscle, hair follicles, and brain. It regulates MAP kinase activity, and abnormalities in AR signaling are linked to diseases such as prostate cancer, Kennedy's disease, and male infertility. Mutations in this gene are associated with complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS).
