Target Information
The LARGE gene encodes a member of the N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase gene family. It participates in the glycosylation of alpha-dystroglycan and may contribute to glycoprotein and glycosphingolipid sugar chain synthesis. Mutations in this gene cause MDC1D, a congenital muscular dystrophy characterized by severe mental retardation and abnormal glycosylation of alpha-dystroglycan. Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
