Target Information
This gene encodes a DNA-binding protein with high specificity for scaffold or matrix attachment region DNA elements (S/MAR DNA). It is thought to attach chromatin loop bases to the nuclear matrix, though evidence varies on whether it is part of chromatin or the nuclear matrix. Scaffold attachment factors are nuclear matrix proteins that bind S/MAR specifically. The encoded protein may act as a molecular base to assemble a transcriptosome complex near actively transcribed genes. It regulates heat shock protein 27 transcription, functions as an estrogen receptor co-repressor, and is implicated in breast tumorigenesis. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
