Target Information

The inhibin alpha subunit joins either the beta A or beta B subunit to form a pituitary FSH secretion inhibitor. Inhibin negatively regulates gonadal stromal cell proliferation and exhibits tumor-suppressor activity. Serum levels of inhibin reflect granulosa-cell tumor size and can serve as a marker for primary and recurrent disease. In prostate cancer, inhibin alpha-subunit gene expression is suppressed and undetectable in poorly differentiated tumor cells. Expression varies across gonadal and extragonadal tissues, suggesting inhibin functions as both a growth/differentiation factor and a hormone.
