Target Information
CD28 antigen is a 44 kDa disulfide-linked homodimeric T cell-specific surface glycoprotein. It belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily and is constitutively expressed on most peripheral blood T lymphocytes. CD28 is a critical T cell costimulatory receptor that provides a secondary activation signal through binding to CD80 and CD86 on antigen-presenting cells.
In addition to co-stimulation, CD28 prevents T cells from entering an anergic or apoptotic state. In murine peripheral lymphoid organs and blood, all CD4+ and CD8+ T cells express CD28. Expression is highest in immature thymocytes (CD3-, CD8+, CD4+8+, and CD4-8- cells expressing alpha/beta and gamma/delta TCR). Mature thymocytes express CD28 at two- to fourfold lower levels.
Diseases associated with CD28 dysfunction include mycosis fungoides and Sezary’s disease.
