Target Information
This protein encodes a selenoprotein containing a selenocysteine (Sec) residue at its active site. The Sec is encoded by the UGA codon that normally signals translation termination. The 3′ UTR of selenoprotein genes includes a stem-loop structure called SECIS, essential for recognizing UGA as a Sec codon rather than a stop signal.
Studies suggest this protein may regulate cytokine production and play a key role in controlling the inflammatory response.
