Target Information
Adipose tissue plays a major role in regulating metabolic and immune processes by producing bioactive molecules called adipokines. The C1q/tumor necrosis factor-alpha-related proteins (CTRPs) 1–7 are paralogs of adiponectin/ACRP30, expressed in various tissues unlike adiponectin which is specific to adipocytes. CTRPs primarily act on liver and muscle tissues to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism. Structural analysis indicates an evolutionary link between TNF and C1q-containing proteins, suggesting a shared ancestral gene related to innate immunity. Like other members of the adiponectin and CTRP family, mature CTRP7 is secreted and circulates within the organism.
