Target Information
Adipose tissue plays a major role in regulating physiological and pathological processes such as metabolism and immunity by producing and secreting bioactive molecules called adipokines.
The adiponectin/ACRP30 family and its paralogs, C1q/tumor necrosis factor-alpha-related proteins (CTRPs) 1–7, are highly conserved adipokines.
Unlike adiponectin, which is expressed only in differentiated adipocytes, CTRPs are expressed in various tissues and act mainly on liver and muscle to control glucose and lipid metabolism.
Structural analysis of adiponectin revealed an evolutionary link between TNF and C1q-containing proteins, suggesting a common ancestral innate immunity gene.
CTRP6 contains at least four glycosylation motifs, indicating that it may be highly post-translationally modified.
