Target Information
OPA1 is a dynamin-related GTPase critical for maintaining mitochondrial morphology and mtDNA. Mutations in OPA1 are associated with heterozygous optic atrophy, a dominant trait leading to reduced visual clarity and sometimes blindness. The condition typically begins in childhood and progresses with age due to degeneration of optic nerve fibers. OPA1 dysfunction is also linked to mitochondrial abnormalities associated with certain schizophrenia characteristics, affecting apoptosis and cellular metabolic regulation.
