Target Information
HADHB encodes the beta subunit of the mitochondrial trifunctional protein, which catalyzes the last three steps of mitochondrial beta-oxidation of long-chain fatty acids. The mitochondrial membrane-bound heterocomplex consists of four alpha and four beta subunits, with the beta subunit responsible for 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase activity. This protein can also bind RNA and reduce the stability of certain mRNAs. Mutations in HADHB cause trifunctional protein deficiency. The alpha and beta subunit genes are located adjacently in a head-to-head orientation in the human genome. Various alternatively spliced transcript variants exist.
