Target Information
This gene encodes a transmembrane receptor known as DC-SIGN, expressed on dendritic cells and macrophages. It plays a key role in the innate immune system by recognizing diverse pathogens, including parasites and viruses. The protein consists of three domains: an N-terminal transmembrane domain, a tandem-repeat neck domain, and a C-type lectin carbohydrate recognition domain. The extracellular region functions both as a pathogen recognition receptor and a cell adhesion receptor. The neck domain enables homo-oligomerization, enhancing multivalent ligand binding. Variations in the neck domain affect ligand-binding capacity. DC-SIGN is closely related to L-SIGN (GeneID 10332), differing in ligand-binding properties and tissue distribution. Multiple splicing variants exist.
