Target Information
The CYP17A1 gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These proteins are monooxygenases that catalyze many reactions involved in drug metabolism and the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. This protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and exhibits both 17α-hydroxylase and 17,20-lyase activities. It plays a key role in the steroidogenic pathway producing progestins, mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, androgens, and estrogens. Mutations in this gene are linked to isolated steroid-17α-hydroxylase deficiency, 17α-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase deficiency, pseudohermaphroditism, and adrenal hyperplasia.
