Target Information

This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) family. Sequential activation of caspases plays a crucial role in the execution phase of apoptosis. Caspases are synthesized as inactive proenzymes that undergo proteolytic processing at conserved aspartic residues to generate large and small subunits, which dimerize to form the active enzyme.
Caspase-3 cleaves and activates caspases 6, 7, and 9, and is itself processed by caspases 8, 9, and 10. It is the predominant caspase responsible for cleavage of amyloid-beta precursor protein, associated with neuronal death in Alzheimer’s disease.
Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
