The P2X4 receptor belongs to the purinoceptor family for ATP and functions as a ligand-gated ion channel with high calcium permeability. It shows low sensitivity to antagonists such as suramin and PPADS. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified, though their full-length forms remain undetermined.
