Target Information
CD59 (Protectin) is a small (18–20 kDa) GPI-anchored ubiquitously expressed inhibitor of the membrane attack complex (MAC). It regulates complement cascade to protect autologous cells from lysis. CD59 binds complement C8 and/or C9, preventing formation of the cytolytic pore. It also acts as a low-affinity ligand for human CD2, contributing to T cell costimulation and lymphocyte signaling. Mutations in CD59 cause CD59 deficiency, leading to hemolytic anemia, thrombosis, and cerebral infarction. Multiple alternatively spliced variants are known.
