Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single ~80 kDa polypeptide chain folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺).
LF is found in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions and is a major component of neutrophil secondary granules.
It plays roles in:
- Regulation of iron homeostasis
- Host defense against microbial infections
- Anti-inflammatory activity
- Regulation of cellular growth and differentiation
- Protection against cancer development and metastasis
Lactoferrin efficiently binds and removes Fe³⁺ from its environment and also exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activity.
Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) have been identified. Receptors for LTF are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and certain bacteria.
