Product Specific Information

The antibody was affinity-purified from rabbit antiserum by affinity chromatography using an epitope-specific immunogen. Purity is >95% (by SDS-PAGE).

Target Information

Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class constitutes the major proteins of the vertebrate eye lens, maintaining its transparency and refractive index. Lens fiber cells lose their nuclei during development, so crystallins are synthesized once and retained throughout life, making them extremely stable. Mammalian lens crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families, with beta and gamma forming a superfamily. Gamma-crystallins are monomeric, highly symmetrical proteins lacking connecting peptides and terminal extensions. They are differentially regulated after early development. Four gamma-crystallin genes (gamma-A through gamma-D) and three pseudogenes (gamma-E, gamma-F, gamma-G) form a tandem gene cluster. Mutations or aging-related changes in these genes are associated with cataract formation.
