Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes. The proteins of the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult.
The MRPS11 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein with high sequence similarity to ribosomal protein S11P family members. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 20. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
