Target Information
Proteins of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes like arthritis and metastasis. Most MMPs are secreted as inactive proproteins, activated upon cleavage by extracellular proteinases. The MMP12 enzyme degrades soluble and insoluble elastin and may play roles in aneurysm formation and emphysema development. The gene localizes to chromosome 11q22.3.
