Target Information

Neuron specific enolase (NSE, ENO1, ENO2, ENO3) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis. NSE is highly stable in biological fluids and can diffuse into extracellular spaces and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when neuronal membranes are damaged.

NSE is one of three mammalian enolases (ENO1, ENO2, ENO3), also known as enolase alpha, beta, and gamma.

  • Alpha-subunit: expressed in most tissues
  • Beta-subunit: expressed in muscle
  • Gamma-subunit: expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells

Co-expression of NSE and chromogranin A is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms. NSE serves as a useful marker for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells. Release of NSE into CSF and blood is used as a biomarker for neuronal injury and as a clinical marker in neurological disorders such as stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and herpetic encephalitis. Elevated NSE levels are also associated with certain neoplasias, including pediatric neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
