Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs exist, classified into type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin paired with keratin 5, distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas. It is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. At least one acidic and one basic keratin are expressed in all epithelial cells.
