Target Information
There are more than 85 antigenic types of S. pneumoniae, determined by capsule antigens. Although S. pneumoniae is part of the normal respiratory flora, invasion can cause pneumonia and meningitis. The polysaccharide capsule protects the bacterium from phagocytosis and serves as a major virulence factor. Infections are generally treatable with antibiotics, but resistant strains are emerging.
