Target Information

Steroid receptors are ligand-dependent intracellular proteins that regulate transcription of specific genes by binding to DNA sequences after activation by hormones. Before activation, these receptors associate with various proteins, including heat shock proteins (HSP70 and HSP90) and immunophilins (FKBP52, FKBP54, and CyP-40). Additional associated proteins include p23, p60, and p48.
p23, together with HSP70, HSP90, and p60, forms a transient complex with the progesterone receptor (PR). The cloned human p23 protein consists of 160 amino acids, is highly conserved, and shows no homology to previously identified proteins. It is an acidic phosphoprotein with an aspartic acid-rich C-terminal domain and multiple phosphorylation sites.
In vitro studies indicate that p23 binds to HSP90 and is required for HSP90 and CyP-40 binding to PR. Although its exact mechanism is not fully understood, p23 is considered an important factor in PR function.
