Target Information
Cytokeratin 18 (Keratin 18, KRT18, type I cytoskeletal 18) belongs to the type A (acidic) subfamily of low molecular weight keratins, existing in combination with Cytokeratin 8. It is expressed in tissues from the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urogenital tracts, as well as endocrine, exocrine, and mesothelial cells. Cytokeratin 18 is primarily found in non-squamous epithelia and in most adenocarcinomas and ductal carcinomas, but not in squamous cell carcinomas. Hepatocellular carcinomas express only cytokeratins 8 and 18. Mutations in the KRT18 gene are associated with cryptogenic cirrhosis. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein are known. Cytokeratin expression patterns are useful in differentiating epithelial malignancies. Cytokeratin antibodies aid in tumor differential diagnosis using immunohistochemistry and are valuable tools in cytopathology and flow cytometry assays.
